   Chemistry in the News

  •  A novel strategy for engineering seminconductor materials can boost the performance of water-splitting solar cells for hydrogen production, according to a new study by researchers in Professor Jin Zhang & Professor Yat Li's laboratories. Click here for details on Graduate students Jennifer Hensel and Gongming Wang's research.
  • John and Grace Wang recently endowed a graduate award in Chemistry/Biochemistry.  THANK YOU BOTH VERY MUCH!!!  John received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from UCSC.  Click here to read his interview in Stocks & Commodities Magazine.
  • Congratulations to Glenn Millhauser on being elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.  Professor Millhauser was recognized "for distinguished contributions to the field of biophysical chemistry, polymer folding, prion protein function and melanocortin signaling." He studies diseases caused by abnormal proteins, using sophisticated techniques such as magnetic resonance spectroscopy to investigate the structures and functions of protein molecules. Much of his recent research has focused on the prion protein, which causes mad cow disease and the related human affliction, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Professor Millhauser has also made important contributions to the understanding of a molecular signaling system known as the melanocortin pathway, which appears to be involved in diseases related to energy balance, including diabetes, obesity, and anorexia.
  • Congratulations to Jin Zhang on being elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society. This is a very prestigious honor as election to Fellowship in the American Physical Society is limited to no more than one half of one percent of the membership. Election of Jin to APS Fellowship is recognition of his outstanding contributions to physics. In particular, Jin was recognized: “For important fundamental understanding of photophysical properties and charge carrier dynamics of semiconductor and metal nanomaterials based on ultrafast studies.”
  • Phil Crews received the Division of Physical & Biological Science's 2008-09 Outstanding Faculty Award.  Read the award letter here!
  • Pradip Mascharak and Mike Rose develop novel light-sensitive compounds show promise for cancer therapy.  Read the article here!
  • Biochemists Roger Linington and Scott Lokey featured in a CNBC TV News Story about their work in the Chemical Screening Center.

Chem 1B - If you are currently enrolled in either Chem 1B-01 or Chem 1B-02, you must attend the first discussion section next week and YOU MUST BE ON TIME.  There are MANY people waiting to get into these classes and if you fail to attend or are more than 10 minutes late, YOU WILL BE DROPPED from the Chem 1B lecture and discussion section as well as the 1M lab.

Chem 1M - If you are currently enrolled in a Chem 1M lab, you must attend the first lab next week and YOU MUST BE ON TIME.  There are MANY people waiting to get in and if you fail to attend or are more than 10 minutes late, YOU WILL BE DROPPED from the 1M lab as well as the Chem 1B lecture and discussion section.

Chem 108A - Additional seats have been opened but there are a limited number and they are available on a first come basis.

Chem 108B - Seats are still available.

Chem 108L - All labs are full and no additional sections will be opened.  Chem 108L will be offered in Summer Session 1 and in Fall 2010.

Chem 108M - Seats are still available.

Chem 112B and Chem 112M - Permission codes have been given out for the remaining open seats.  No additional seats will be created.

Chem 163B - This course is full but the instructor has plans to accommodate all who wish to take this course. Please attend the lecture.  The Department is looking for larger discussion section space.

Who to contact with an advising question

Chemistry Advising is located in Thimann 383.  Open office hours are 1-3 pm Monday through Friday and Wednesday from 10-12.  You may also reach them by phone at 831-459-4143 or via email at chemistryadvising@ucsc.edu.

Please do not call the Chemistry Department Office with advising questions.   We are not able to help you and will refer you to the location and contact information above.

If you get an error message while enrolling

If you get an error message indicating that you have not met the prerequisites but you know that is not true because you are either currently enrolled in the prereq class or received a passing grade in a previous quarter, then it may be because you did not select the lecture, discussion section and lab before trying to enroll. All three must be selected at the same time for Chem 1A, Chem 1B and Chem 1C.

We suggest that you try again with this in mind.  If you are still unable to enroll, call the Registrar's help line at 831-459-4412.

Please do not call the Registrar's Office if your problem is that the course is full.  They will refer you to the Chemistry Department and we will direct you to the Course Information section above.

Please do not call the Chemistry Department Office if you are having a technical problem.   We are not able to help you and will refer you to the Registrar Help Line.
