Kenneth and Ann Thimann Scholarship
Deans’ and Chancellor’s Awards
Doug Drexler Chemistry Scholarship
Ellen Renard Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Chemistry
Joseph F. Bunnett Research Prize
C. Fiore Chemistry Prize

Honors in the Chemistry major is awarded to those students who have consistently attained an excellent level of understanding and practice in the required courses for the major. When a student petitionsto graduate the total record is automatically reviewed by the department's Scholarship-Awards-Honors Committee. The Committee looks for improvement or consistency to a high level of overall accomplishment in the student's coursework.

The same guideline and procedures apply to the award of Highest Honors except for the obvious application of the highest academimc standards.

Honors in the Thesis. It is possible for a senior thesis to be awarded honors in the thesis, a separate notation on the student's transcript. If the sponsoring professor recommends thesis honors, he/she selects a second faculty member to read the paper. Both must agree for thesis honors to be awarded. A list of undergraduate thesis titles from Chemistry majors is on page 27.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

In 1986 Congress established the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program to pay tribute to Senator Barry M. Goldwater.  This endowed recognition program was established to foster and encourage excellence in science and mathematics.  UCSC is given the opportunity to nominate four applicants.  For further information about this scholarship go to: http://pbsbo.ucsc.edu/dean/Goldwatercall.pdf

Goldwater Scholarship Recipients:
2005-06. Blaise Hamel, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology major
2004-05. Tracey Kwong, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology major
2002-03. Bentley Lim, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology major
2000-01. Kiowa S. Bower, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology major
1999-2000. Peter B. Madrid, Chemistry major

The following scholarships are selected by the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences. Selections are based on high academic merit and where applicable, qualifications specified by the donor.

Kenneth and Ann Thimann Scholarship

In 1984 Dr. Kenneth Thimann and his wife, Ann, established “The Kenneth and Ann Thimann Scholarship Fund.” The scholarship award of $2,000 is awarded at the end of the academic year to a graduating UCSC senior, who has been accepted to graduate school and shows the most promise as a future scientist in one of the disciplines of biology, chemistry, physics, and earth sciences.

Thimann Scholarship Recipients:
2008-09. Jaime Desoto, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology major
2007-08. Katherine Nelson, Chemistry major
2005-06. Blaise Hamel, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology major
2004-05. Tracey Kwong, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology major
2003-04. Boaz Vilozny, Chemistry major Thea Wilson, Chemistry major
2002-03. Bentley Lim, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology major
         and Charles Rankin, Chemistry major
2001-02. Ross Corriden, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology major

Deans’ Undergraduate Awards

In late Spring, fifty undergraduates, 10 from each of the five academic divisions will receive the Dean's Award of $100 to recognize outstanding academic achievements by undergraduate students.  These awards are intended to encourage outstanding scholarship and creativity among undergraduate students.

Dean's Undergraduate Award Recipients:
2008-09. David Lee, Crystal Nyitray and Kevin Tharp
2003-04. Andrew Kleinke and Thao Nguyen

The following scholarships are selected by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Selections are based on qualifications specified by the donor and academic merit.

Doug Drexler Chemistry Scholarship

Dr. and Mrs. Jerome Drexler established this scholarship as a memorial for their son, who graduated with a degree in chemistry. It is designed to recognize outstanding UCSC chemistry and biochemistry undergraduates.

Doug Drexler Chemistry Scholarship Recipients:

2003-04. David Combs

Joseph F. Bunnett Research Prize

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry established the prize in 2000 to be awarded to seniors majoring in Chemistry or Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (BMB). Faculty researchers are solicited for nominations of students conducting a research project. Awards are based on the nomination package and academic record.
