Chemistry 1C

Section 01, Winter Quarter 2007

Earth & Marine Sciences B206

Course Rules

I do not like rules, so I will keep this simple.

Exam Policy:
You must be present at each of the exams at the appointed times.  A missed exam is treated as a zero in your class record.  If you are extremely ill and cannot take a particular exam you must: i) contact the instructor before the exam takes place and ii) provide documentation from your allopathic (MD-degreed) physician.  Arrangements for a make up exam or alternative will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, but in general you must do everything possible to attend all exams and the course instructor is under no obligation to provide a make-up exam, who can elect to make your final exam 100% of your grade.  Further details regarding this and similar policies can be found in a UCSC document called the Navigator.  I adhere to these rules because I am legally obligated to do so, but even more importantly because bending these rules to accomidate one student is unfair to everyone else.  To be treated fairly, everyone must be treated equally.

Discussion sections(referred to as "SECONDARY DISCUSS" in the Schedule of Classes) are an integral part of this course and attendance, in the section for which you are enrolled, is required.  Passing Chem 1C requires that you miss no more than two section meetings.  In my view, the only way to really learn science is to solve problems.  Thus, each week there will be a substantial homework assignment and a brief quiz in section.  The quiz will usually be a randomly chosen problem from that week's homework.  The homework problem sets are meant to be challenging, so you should be willing and prepared to spend at least five hours a week outside of class working on your assignments.  You are required to do all of the homework, but you are not required to hand it in. You are a responsible adult, so it is up to you to do the homework and make sure that you understand it.  My job it to teach and to assess your understanding of the material. The homework serves as a basis for preparing for the exams, which are in turn the basis for your course grade.  The exams will cover the same material as the homework. If you do the homework, and do it right, and understand it, you will do well on the exams.

Course credit will be assigned in the following way:

Feb 5 Midterm
40 %
Final Exam
60 %

We are dedicated to doing everything that is reasonable to help you learn the material of Chem 1C.  Furthermore, we will be prepared to present lectures and sections on time and within the appointed time slots.  We request that you show respect for your classmates and instructors by:

Following these simple requests will enable all of us to focus on the endeavor that brought us together: learning chemistry.
